IRU welcomes the European Parliament’s adoption of the revised rules governing the operation of bus and coach services and calls on Member States to seize this opportunity to come to an agreement and move the issue forward in the Council.
The EP legislative resolution adopted today is in line with IRU’s recommendation to strike the right balance between protecting public services and increasing mobility, especially in Member States where competition is currently limited.
By guaranteeing the overall sustainability, multimodality and connectivity of the EU mobility system, this reform represents a win-win scenario for travellers and businesses alike. Increasing the availability of bus and coach transport in the EU serves as one of the easiest ways of improving road safety, reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring that the general population, particularly disadvantaged social groups, are well-served with reliable transport links.
In an effort to make EU mobility more sustainable, IRU urges the EU Council to build on the momentum gained on this issue and press for a rapid agreement on the revised bus and coach market rules.
