As we reach the end of 2020, we look back on the year and reflect on the highs and lows for our industry. Without question, the pandemic has marked 2020 as a year like no other in road transport. 

With the current outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) continuing to evolve, IRU remains committed to working together with relevant stakeholders and authorities to keep its staff, members and the transport community safe.

The recent outbreak of Coronavirus has caused widespread concern in terms of its health impact on those people infected and the disruption it has brought to people’s lives as well as the wider economy.

Erik Østergaard, CEO of IRU’s member in Denmark, has been awarded the Gold Order of Merit for services to the Republic of Austria by the Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.

IRU met with new Secretary General of the International Transport Forum (ITF), Young Tae Kim, to reinforce co-operation on the 2018 ITF annual summit on Road Safety and Security, and to reinforce collaboration on leading issues, including decarbonisation, and the ECMT Multilateral Permit System.

The development of the SafeFITS Model is part of IRU and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) mission to work in partnership to improve road safety, with a new tool to help governments design effective road safety action plans that will save lives.

IRU embraces innovation and change in Kiev at the 17th International Road Transport Conference.  Setting the stage for the global road transport community to improve efficiency, professionalism and road safety, the event initiated the adoption of the “Kiev Resolution” for sustainable transport.  

IRU’s Presidential Executive, meeting in Geneva yesterday, has finalised and authorised the start of an independent external audit regarding the allegations which were recently made against IRU and its management.
