From Cairo to Bucharest: Tackling the shortage of professional drivers

25 Mar 2025 · People

A recent workshop explored the challenges and opportunities of a pilot driver mobility scheme between Egypt and Romania.

The driver shortage crisis shows no signs of easing, putting increasing pressure on mobility and logistics operators. Without urgent solutions, this issue could disrupt entire economies and societies.

While efforts to attract local talent, including young people and women, remain the priority, the industry must also look to third-country drivers for immediate relief.

IRU, together with its Romanian member UNTRR, recently brought together key institutional stakeholders and over ten leading transport companies for a workshop on a pilot driver mobility scheme between Egypt and Romania.

This initiative is part of the first phase of the Skilled Driver Mobility for EU (SDM4EU) project, supported by the Migration Partnership Facility (MPF). The project aims to establish structured driver mobility programmes between selected EU countries and EU Talent Partnership Countries.
