The administrations of Azerbaijan and Georgia have both pledged support for TIR digitalisation to enhance trade and transit facilitation procedures, not only between the two countries, but also across the entire region via intermodal corridors.
Within the framework of the World Customs Organization IT conference held in Tbilisi, IRU Secretary General, Umberto de Pretto, met with Professor Aydin Aliyev, chairman of the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and with Giorgi Tabuashvili, First Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia and Director General of the Georgia Revenue Service.
The meetings are the newest milestone for the move towards digitalising TIR, which was endorsed last month in a final report on the UNECE/IRU eTIR pilot project between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Republic of Turkey.
The report highlights the successes of the completed pilot project and encouraged Iran, Turkey and other contracting parties to continue piloting digital TIR and to move towards full digitalisation of the system.
