Arab states adopt IRU proposal for transport of dangerous goods by road

27 Nov 2024 · Prosperity

The transport of dangerous goods presents significant risks if not managed properly. The League of Arab States has now approved a joint proposition, made by IRU, to harmonise procedures across the Arab region.

The uncoordinated, unprofessional movement of dangerous goods can lead to catastrophic consequences, such as explosions, toxic gas releases and environmental contamination.

To address such challenges, IRU has proposed harmonising the transport of dangerous goods across the Arab region. With unanimous approval from the Council of Transport Ministers, the protocol paves the way for safer, more sustainable road transport.

The proposal aligns with the United Nations ADR agreement, a treaty designed to ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials by road.

The joint protocol aims to implement key ADR provisions across the 22 Arab League member states. Its objectives include enhancing road safety, reducing the risks associated with the transport of dangerous goods, and bolstering security measures to prevent misuse.

The proposal also seeks to strengthen regulatory frameworks, establish professional qualifications for key industry actors, and promote environmental responsibility. These measures are essential to protect human life, preserve the environment, and ensure safer transport practices across the region.

The ADR agreement, established in 1957, sets global standards for the classification, packaging and transport of dangerous goods. It has been adopted by 54 countries. IRU has a longstanding partnership with the United Nations in drafting the ADR agreement to ensure safe transport standards worldwide.
