This study aims to determine the degree to which training for professional drivers could contribute to improving road safety. It also aims to measure the extent to which that training might contribute to the overall efficiency of commercial road transport by reducing fuel consumption, minimising damage to transported cargoes, mitigating vehicle wear and tear, and improving the overall quality of service delivery. IRU commissioned this study as part of its contribution to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and its ongoing efforts to improve road transport safety and efficiency in the Arab region. It is structured around a thorough literature review and combines this with a statistical analysis of data collected from thirty-two key commercial freight transport companies operating in six different Arab countries (The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and Egypt).
