IRU was in Doha, taking part in a road safety conference, which highlighted training and professional qualification as the key to attacking the cause of road traffic accidents.
Discussions at the conference underlined how driver qualification is not only socially responsible, but also profitable for companies of all sizes.
Participants agreed on the need for policy-makers to support internationally recognised training standards, with compulsory frameworks for qualifications for commercial road transport professionals as this plays a very significant role in cutting road fatalities and achieving the targets of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.
Alongside training, innovation and new tech are major game changers for road safety, and will be explored further at the IRU World Congress in Oman.
Mowasalat – under the patronage of the Qatari Minister of Transport, HE Jassem Saif Al Sulaiti – co-organised the conference, which was hosted by the Traffic Department of the Ministry of Interior.
