UN Forum in Laos casts mobility at the heart of Asian urbanisation issues, with IRU presenting its vision for inclusive and sustainable transport.
Highlighting the importance of investment and development in rural transport sectors, the conference will establish a roadmap for sustainable transport, aligned with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
IRU’s vision for a paradigm shift in collective door-to-door public transport, infrastructure and services, offers a means to realise the UN SDGs. Placing the emphasis on collective door-to-door public transport, with a key role for the private sector, including buses, coaches, taxis and intermediate public transport, IRU emphasises the importance of setting clear policy and business targets, including national and local mobility plans.
Oleg Kamberski, IRU’s lead in Passenger Transport will present IRU’s work. He comments,
“The issue of mobility in Asia must straddle the contrasting challenges of intense urbanisation versus rural connectivity. A joined-up approach that transcends specific transport demands to encompass wider ambitions, such as social integration, sustainable development and poverty alleviation is at the core of IRU’s vision of a mobility eco-system that is inclusive and economically and socially viable.”
IRU’s taxi initiatives, including guidance on electric vehicles, offer new mobility options, while Smart Move places buses and coaches at the top of the mobility agenda.
Training, such as that provided by IRU Academy, also contributes to increasing efficiency, eco-driving and safety, while setting global standards for the professionalisation of the industry.
Held from 14 to 16 March 2017 in Vientiane, Laos, the event will attract 500 participants, including senior government representatives from Asia and the Pacific countries, city mayors, and international experts.
