An IRU delegation was in Iraq last week to lay the groundwork for the country’s first cross-border movement under the global TIR transit system.
The Republic of Iraq is on the brink of a major milestone in cross-border trade, with its first TIR movement expected to take place soon. This marks a historic moment for the country and a significant step towards full integration into the internationally recognised customs transit system.
Last week, IRU engaged in key discussions with public and private sector stakeholders, reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to modernising trade and adopting international best practices.
A dedicated workshop was also conducted during the visit, focusing on the importance of UN conventions such as TIR and ADR (the treaty on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). Experts highlighted the conventions’ vital roles in streamlining cross-border trade, enhancing trade security, and reducing road accidents. Discussions further underscored the need for professional excellence in road transport and the development of robust regulatory frameworks.
A central theme throughout the meetings was the vital role of public-private partnerships in achieving these goals. Effective collaboration between government authorities and the private sector is essential to ensuring the smooth implementation of TIR and ADR, strengthening Iraq’s position in regional and global trade.
As Iraq prepares for this milestone, it stands at the threshold of a new era in international transport and trade, embracing global best practices to drive efficiency, security and economic growth.
