Trucks on trucks: TIR goes from strength to strength in China

2 Oct 2024 · Prosperity

For the first time, a Chinese-operated TIR truck has exported finished Chinese goods. The cargo transported? Trucks!

A TIR truck has transported two semi-trailers produced by the China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, each weighing 7,300kg. Until now, Chinese TIR hauliers had only exported semi-finished goods.

The TIR truck set off after completing its export and TIR procedures in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou. The operation was conducted by a Chinese TIR operator, using a Chinese vehicle and TIR carnet for the whole journey.

Heavy trucks are typically transported by sea or a combination of road and sea. TIR trucks cut transport times of such movements by up to 70% compared with sea, and 60% compared with road and sea combination.

More about TIR

The United Nations-backed TIR system enables goods to be shipped from a country of origin to a country of destination in sealed load compartments that are controlled by customs via a multilateral, mutually recognised system.

TIR streamlines procedures at borders, reducing the administrative burden for customs authorities and transport and logistics companies. It cuts border waiting times significantly, saving time and money.

In China, TIR procedures can also be handled at inland customs offices. This is especially beneficial for out of gauge goods, perishable food, dangerous goods, e-commerce, precision instruments and other goods with high requirements for transport safety and timeliness.

The TIR system connects China with over 30 countries across Eurasia, offering more secure transport options that are over 80% faster and 50% cheaper than other available transport options and routes.
