Change has been slow. What can be done to accelerate it?
Globally, women are severely underrepresented across the transport industry: less than 13% of transport workers are women.
In the EU, for example, 22% of transport workers are women, while only 14% of ground transport workers, including road transport, are women, as opposed to 20% in maritime and 40% in aviation.
For professional drivers, the rates are even lower.
The challenge of getting more women interested in joining the road transport sector is not new. IRU and its members have been conducting research, launching programmes and advocating for action. However, change has been slow. What can be done to accelerate change?
This is the question a group of 14 IRU New Industry Shapers women working in road transport tackled over the course of three virtual dialogues this year.
The shapers, who occupy various roles in the sector from all global regions, relied on their personal experiences, knowledge and expertise to share, debate and advance solutions.
