The TIR system is driving development and prosperity by opening the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Iran (KTAI) trade corridor.
Seven TIR trucks carrying a varied cargo of yeast, pistachios and tyres arrived safely from Iran to Kyrgyzstan, marking the end of the first TIR transport along the entire KTAI corridor.
The success of this TIR pilot, which results from IRU’s partnership with the Economic Cooperation Organization, is an important milestone for the region. As the shortest possible route between Iran and Kyrgyzstan, the opening of the corridor will facilitate trade by cutting transport times and costs.
The corridor’s starting point is the large Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, which means that operators can also take advantage of the intermodal functions of TIR along this new trade route.
According to the World Bank, the total population of the four countries stands at more than 128 million and their combined total GDP equals close to half a trillion dollars. The use of TIR throughout the corridor will optimise trade flows and unleash the potential of these growing markets.
IRU members ABBAT (Tajikistan), ACCI (Afghanistan), AIRTO-KR (Kyrgyzstan) and ICCIMA (Iran), have been instrumental in opening this corridor. IRU will continue to work with its members to promote the use of TIR and open new trade corridors.
