Today, IRU and partner organisations issued a letter calling on the Employment Ministers attending the G20 to support the industry through the COVID-19 crisis.
Together with partner organisations – the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and the International Apparel Federation (IAF), the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), we represent more than 50 million companies and account for 800 million jobs worldwide – almost a quarter of the global workforce.
Given our collective contribution to the global economy and the pivotal role transport will undeniably play in the economic recovery phase, it is indispensable that immediate financial support programmes are facilitated by the governments. Priority should be given to the struggling small and medium enterprises, such as those in the road transport industry, which are currently on the brink of collapse. Their survival and the recovery of the entire economy depends on it.
