In line with Qatar’s 2030 National Vision for sustainable trade, its Ministry of Transport and Communications ran a successful workshop yesterday, in collaboration with IRU, focusing on road transport standards and best practices.
The workshop gathered members of the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of the Interior, representatives of industry leaders, including IRU members Mowasalat Qatar and Tristar.
The aim of the workshop was to highlight the benefits of internationally recognised standards for road transport and encourage capacity building in order to support the implementation of two key transport laws, namely Law 8, regulating road transport, and Law 9, addressing the transport of dangerous goods in the country. These laws aim to establish a level playing field driving quality and safety throughout the road transport mobility and supply chain in Qatar.
During several sessions, the participants discussed a wide range of topics, from the international framework for road transport to the current state of play in Qatar. A topic of specific interest was the need to clarify professional and operational conditions for ride-hailing services vis-à-vis taxi services performed under national licenses.
The panel also discussed other more specific topics, including rules and practices for the transport of dangerous goods and the importance of establishing high professional qualification standards based on internationally recognised industry standards.
The Qatar Ministry of Transport’s Acting Assistant Undersecretary of Land Transport, Engineer Hamad Issa Abdullah stated: “This workshop comes within the framework of the Ministry’s plans and objectives to develop the professional qualifications of their experts as well as all key stakeholders involved in the field of land transport.
“Based on international best practices, the Ministry of Transport aims to develop this vital sector in a sustainable and integrated manner in support of Qatar National Vision 2030,” he added.
IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto emphasised: “Tackling inefficiencies in road transport services can yield significant development benefits. The road transport sector requires clear frameworks to improve productivity, safety, competition, sustainability, transparency and overall professionalisation.”
