The Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) forms part of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), a legal entity governed by private law with non-profit status. Based in Thessaloniki, CERTH was founded in March 2000 under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) within the Greek Ministry of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks.
HIT’s mission is to provide transport research and support policy- and decision-making on issues relating to land, maritime, air and intermodal transport operations as well as their organisation, planning, standardisation, economic analysis, management, vehicle technology and respective impacts. HIT collaborates with established transport institutions abroad and represents Greece in relevant scientific forums. HIT’s activities include basic and applied research projects as well as specialist studies. It formulates and proposes standards and model processes within its relevant fields and also implements and maintains databases. In addition, HIT organises professional development and training programmes for specific user groups and promotes bilateral and multilateral partnerships with similar research institutes and organisations in Greece and abroad.
HIT has considerable expertise in the road transport sector, ranging from modelling, developing and implementing ITS solutions and goods transport schemes to contributing to safety policy and training.
