World Sustainable Transport Day, celebrated on 26 November, is a special occasion to reflect and make transport safer, more efficient, more sustainable and greener.
Sustainable transport connects people, communities and economies in harmony with the environment, improving social equity and development while reinforcing safety and resilience.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution to designate a UN World Sustainable Transport Day at its 77th session in May 2023. The resolution followed IRU’s initial proposal to have a dedicated World Transport Day.
In its resolution, the UN General Assembly invited all UN member states and organisations, international and regional organisations, and civil society to mark the day by educating and holding events aimed at enhancing the public’s knowledge of sustainable transport issues.
It also encouraged the UN and international organisations, regional institutions and the private sector to further coordinate their efforts and collaborate in mobilising financial and technical assistance to countries, particularly developing countries, to strengthen links between all modes of transport.
IRU has created a dedicated World Sustainable Transport Day website which includes ready-to-use and customisable social media packages to help everyone celebrate this important day and advance sustainable transport.
